The Cathedral has a long and rich history dating back to the early 19th century. In 1803, Louisiana was purchased by the United States from France as part of the Louisiana Purchase. In 1808, the first Catholic Mass was celebrated in Lafayette at the home of Judge Jacques Dupre. In 1811, construction began on St. John’s Church, which would become the first permanent church building in Lafayette. In 1821, St. John’s Church was consecrated and became a cathedral.
